@stes314 Technically you can swap those four values with anything else you like. Those were just some examples. It all depends on what values you want to base your morality system on.

Got to say, i really do not value or even think too much about moral choices
i tend to be evil due to it giving me more power, more items that i can do more fun stuff with

Bioshock “evil” gave me more adam that i could spend to be one powerful badass

KOTOR same thing “evil” was just more fun

Then again the good side always feels well in lack of better words, i feel like a pussy with the the good side

Kill 20 people and get a new gun, or save 20 people and get some cash
    im going for the gun

I think the factions idea is fantastic. There is no such thing as absolute morality, that’s what makes games not feel right- the game developer is judging your choices. As soon as that judgement is passed to other characters, it becomes a far superior measure.

The best morality system would merely give you consequences- it’s up to the player to feel right about what they did, or intended to do, and how they may have been judged for doing so

When my position as concept artist in the gaming industry is secured I will make all my buds see your fair points.

How come the government is not funding you to make more of these videos?

One major problem with your “colour wheel” idea is that it lacks any way to show selfish or sadistic actions. Your colour wheel would work well for many choices, and it would be possible to design a game with only these types of choices, but what influence would a choice such as nuking megaton for money in fallout 3 have? You are not increasing discipline, freedom, the good of the many or the rights of the few.

I like your ideas, but you are making a huge assumption. You assume that all players want to be “good”. Some like to play fallout 3 by going round and killing and enslaving as many people they can. Games are not real life, people don’t want to be good, sometimes they like being a massive asshole, often the funnest parts of a game will be doing evil, if you make doing good a sacrifice and evil, or not doing good easy, then you are destroying a major part of the game.

This is an very insightful video! I rarely see practical solutions for these kinds of problems make sense, but your solutions definitely do!

I’m about to finish the last half of my video essay/analysis of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, check it out if you get the chance!

If anyone remembers the game Bully, every mission gives you minus and plus morale.

@Vanalovan I really don’t think the fact you could persuade Zaeed was really an issue. You still made that initial choice while being aware of the consequences, you still faced that dillema of “do I sacrifice the mission or do I let the innocent workers die?” without knowing that you’d be given a second chance at persuading Zaeed in the end.

And yet, that wasn’t a “Good Vs. Evil” choice, it was a just a “do things by the book Vs. do whatever it takes”, which is what I love in ME’s system.

@mecrutio19 I definitely started after Yahtzee. His series had just gotten popular and I had to make a presentation for class, so I mimicked his style. I’ve given it more of my own personal touch since then, but his show was definitely the original inspiration.

well, as a real gamer, i do suggest you to look into the classic Black and White on PC! <— it’s a repetitive game, but it really has that good and bad moral value thing like no other!

blah blah words everyone knows put into order. i sound smart… now let me go find a job. really? YOUR giving advise on morality. i thought this was a good video till the end. if you don’t have a job it doesn’t help sway the world by constructing chromaticism in areas you haven’t yet conquered.

maybe there should be a video on the wider topic of morality in videogames.

the most profound moral choices i’ve had in videogames have been where there isn’t a choice, except to keep on playing. shadow of the colossus, killing the boss in metal gear solid 3. maybe if bioshock had made me kill the little sisters rather than give me the choice, there might have been more weight to the moral issue.
